How to: Thoroughly clean your make up brushes

Apart from spot cleaning my make up brushes quickly with baby wipes or my own homemade solution (I will put up a DIY soon), it is advisable to give your make up brushes a thorough clean at least once every two weeks, depending on how often we actually use them. Remember as much of a hassle and time consuming it seems, by neglecting and leaving make up on them they can harbor bacteria that is a no no to the skin. We have to remember we do directly put our brushes to our skin, and like anything else we are sensitive to having touch our face, we should treat our brushes the same. Not to mention regular cleaning keeps them in great condition and gives them a longer lifetime! :)

This is a routine that works for me that I use to give my brushes a thorough clean. Enjoy :)

You will need:

  • Towel
  • Cup
  • Gentle soap/shampoo; I use Johnson's baby shampoo.
  • Conditioner; brushes are made from hair, so treat them like so, we need to condition and moisturize them once in awhile to keep them in good condition.

Now lets begin...

Step One

In your cup add roughly around 2tbsp of your gentle shampoo and dilute with water - I filled the cup half way with water.

Step Two

Continue by dipping your brushes in the solution and using you fingers to massage the solution through the bristles.

Get right in there and make sure you massage right to the center of the brush where make up tends to build up.

Step Three

Rinse the brushes one by one under the tap, using your fingers once again to massage the solution out.

Looking at the solution in the cup you will see all that built up make up.

Step Four

In your clean and empty cup combine 2tbsp of your chosen conditioner and water.  Repeat  Step Two, massaging the diluted conditioner through the brushes. This will condition and make the brushes nice and soft.

Step Five

Allow the conditioned brushes to sit aside for 3 minutes before rinsing them in water.

Step Six

Lay your brushes out on your towel after squeezing any excess water from the bristles. Continue by rolling your towel and pressing down so that the towel can soak up some of that excess water.

Step Seven

Unroll the towel and allow the brushes to air dry. Mine take approx 5hrs.
You can do a Step Eight if you'd like by running a thin toothed comb through the bristles once dry to make them even more softer, it's completely up to you.

Yay! Now you have fresh clean make up brushes that smell oh so nice when you use them!
I hope you all enjoyed this little "How To".
