DIY: Rose Lampshade

Why spend $$ on a new lamp shade when you can just DIY it yourself? Today's Tutorial will be based on how I revamped our old Bedside Lampshades on a budget, into something romantic, sheik and fricken adorable.

Inspired: Recently I've been motivated to redecorate our master bedroom, why? Modern (our previous bedroom theme) is just not me. Our master bedroom palette is now based on pastels, romance, vintage items, you know... the things that make me smile. One thing that I wanted to throw out was our horrid lamps we got on sale at Kmart 2 years ago, it was cheap and functional (what we were going for when we were just starting out). After window shopping around, I noticed any decent Lampshades out there were way over budget - thus, I DIY'd. 
Verdict: I love it! And I'm really glad to say, Mr Pham (whom has no interest in how our master bedroom is decorated) is even impressed and loves it too.

The Before Shot 
Our Lampshades before the refurbishment.
They were out of place in our master bedroom and
needed a make over.

What You Will Need:

• Tissue Paper - Dollar Store
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Hot Glue Gun
• Your Lampshade

Step One
On your tissue paper, draw your strips 1.5" in width and 13" in length. 
Keep in mind the longer your length is, the more volume and larger your rose will be. 

Step Two
Cut your strips using your scissors. 











Step Three
Individually scrunch your strips into balls. 

Step Four
Unscrunch your strips - it is now time to form your roses. 

Roll your strip up about 1/3 of the strips length - as indicated in the picture. 

Step Five
Squeezing one end of the rolled part of the strip, start gathering and twisting the strip around the roll. 

From the top view, the strip should start to form into a rose - as indicated in the picture.

Step Six
When you are about 1" from the end of the strip, twist the end around - it should look similar to the picture. 

Step Seven
Wrap the twisted end around the rose and use your glue gun to glue it down. 

You should be left with something similar to this. 

Step Eight 
Using your scissors, cut the extra stem off - Make sure not to cut off where you have glued, or else the whole rose will fall apart. 

Step Nine
Using your hot glue gun, apply some glue to the base of the rose and glue it to the lampshade. 
The direction I glued my roses was horizontal, but you can glue it in any direction you would like. 

And there you have it! Your DIY'd rose lamp - romantic, vintage and sheik. Bravo!

DIY: Vintage Scroll Paper using your household items.

A DIY Tutorial on how you can make your own Vintage Scroll Paper using everyday household items.
 
Inspired: Way before we had internet or Cable T.V, I remember always turning to paper for entertainment. Since primary school I've always made this for little crafty things such as cards, tags, scrap booking, etc. I decided to put the DIY out there for all you crafty lovers. 
Verdict: I've always done this, it's quick, easy and convenient (especially when you have that birthday party on tomorrow and don't have time to buy a card before then). 

What You Will Need:

• Your Paper
• Instant Coffee
• Boiled Water
• Paint Brush

Step One
Mix your coffee and boiled water together. 
For a more intense colour I had used 2 table spoons of coffee and 1/4 cup of boiled water. 
The more diluted the coffee is with water the more lighter the colour will be.

Step Two
Scrunch your paper into balls. This will allow the coffee to give it more dimension with the creases in the paper. 

Step Three
After unraveling your paper balls it should look something similar to this. 
I always lay mine on cling wrap - less cleaning. 

Step Four
Using your paint brush, paint the coffee over the creased paper. 
For more dimension and different tones of colours I used a dabbing motion for painting. 
Allow to dry, this usually takes about 1.5 hrs to fully dry.

Yay! You are done with your Vintage Scroll Paper.

Crafting.

There are different ways of using this paper, I decided to make some cards for my husband and sisters birthdays.
The far right card is made with a more diluted batch of coffee.

Or you can also use it for accents in a handmade card like in the one on the left. This was made with a more intense batch of coffee.

DIY : Spiked Book Cover

Be more creative with your books and decorate them! This is an easy DIY Tutorial on how you can change the look of your sketch book, personal diary and/or school books!

Inspired: For as long as I could remember I always carried around with me a small sized sketch book nearly everywhere I went, just to quickly sketch any inspirations or ideas that pop into my head (you never know when you come up with an idea!). I always embellished or decorated the book cover - to add more spice, creative inspiration or just amusement for when I pulled the book out. After purchasing my newest sketch book to add to the collection, I thought I'd document it and create a DIY for any of you who would like to do the same to your books.
Verdict: After I did it once, it made me so happy to see it every time I pulled it out of my hand bag that I had to do it to every sketch book!

 

Materials You Will Need:

• Your Sketch Pad/book
• Leather - I used my scrap pieces.
• Gold Studs - Ebay
• A Pencil 
• Leather Hole Puncher or anything sharp enough to penetrate a hole through the leather for your studs. 
• Glue Gun
• Ruler
• Scissors

Step One
Leaving a 4cm allowance, trace around your opened book onto the wrong side of your leather.
Afterwards (leaving no allowance) mark your front cover onto the leather, so you know where the front cover is to place your studs.
Refer to the picture. 

Step Two 
Cut out the tracing of the entire book. 

Step Three
Using your leather hole puncher or sharp object, start making holes on your piece of leather where you had traced the front cover - this is to place your studs. 
You can place your studs however you desire. I placed them about 2cms away from each other. 

Step Four
Start studding away!

Step Five
Using your glue gun, cover your book as you would usually do with adhesive paper. 

Voila! You are now done with your new book cover! 

 Sketching.

DIY That Floral Headband

I've always been fascinated by this ongoing trend of the Floral Headband, there's something chic and romantic about it that just captivates me. 
I was disappointed the other day, when I was browsing online stores to find a Floral Headband for myself - only to find that the decent ones online were costing about $25AU (overpriced much?). I thought the flowers must either be made from silk fabrics, or there is some major hustling going on in the online shopping world, because there is no way I would pay $25AU for a headband (just not possible for my cheap, Asian ass).
The Asian in me came out and I knew I could customize my own headband at quarter of the price. 
This is the DIY Tutorial I had come up with, it was so quick and easy (done in 10 mins). I hope you all enjoy it and give it a try. 

 

 Materials You Will Need:

• Fake Flowers ($2.50, Dollar Store) - You can make a focal point, statement headband, or a pretty, dainty headband, all depends on your flowers.
• An old plastic headband
• Scissors
• Glue gun

Step One
Using your scissors, cut the flowers off their stems, make sure you cut as close to the flower as possible. 

Step Two
Lay the flowers out on how you would like to glue them down. 

Step Three
Use your glue gun and start gluing the flowers down to your headband.

Make sure to hold down tightly until glue has dried.

And there you have it! Your quick and easy Floral Headband.

I'm very happy with my results! Chahaha.

See how easy it was? I'm so happy with the results, just waiting for my next trip to the Dollar Store so I can buy more flowers to play with.
